Things to do in Washington DC: Wordless Wednesday- African Sculpture

Wordless Wednesday- African Sculpture

African Sculpture

What can I say. Viewing Art is a new hobby for me. Next thing I am going to start doing is collecting them. Came across this sculpture on my trip to the African Art Museum at the Smithsonian Institute. This is the work of the Idoma artist Ochai (who died circa 1950)was first documented in 1958 by art historian Roy Sieber and later in the 1970's to 1980's by Sidney L.Kashif. Unlike most other artists,Ochai was a full time sculptor and had commissions from many villages beyond his own. Ochai carving style is bold and expressive, and his face masks seem to capture a sense of arrested movement.

Happy Wednesday everyone.

Lanre,  I can feel the power of this piece.  I don't think this is one I would have in my "collection", it is a bit too intense for me. I appreciate your sharing it.

Great piece of art. I have to make a journey to D.C. to view some of the other pieces of art. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Lanre, You're in the right location to enjoy art!  With DC right there, or not even all that far of a road trip to even NYC, there's a lot to be seen!
