Things to do in Washington DC: March 13th is World Kidney Day

March 13th is World Kidney Day

Most of us know that we all need to watch our cholesterol level in order to avoid heart disease. But few of us don't know that when it comes to kidney or kidney disease. March 13,2008 is the third annual world kidney day. What can you do you ask? There are some things that you can do.

  •    Find out if you are at risk.
  •    Get your kidney function tested.
  •    Support your efforts
  •    Take the kidney Quiz

I took the quiz and I am glad that I did. I learned that

  •    Kidney disease in children and teens is most often due to congential birth defects or genetic diseases.
  •    Before dialysis -"Which is a way of cleaning your blood",total kidney failure meant death.
  •    Currently there are 350,000 Americans that are on dialysis and more than 70,000 people are waiting
  •    for a kidney transplant.
  •    The kidney filters 200 liters of blood every day-enough to fill a large bathtub removing two liters of toxins, wastes and water from your body.
  •    26 million adults suffer from chronic disease,up from 20 million just a few years ago.

And after you finish the quiz, they will ask you to fill out some information so that they can send you a book. Also,if you want to learn more information on certain things such as being a volunteer and getting free newsletters in the mail if you want to. Today will be a good day to get tested. For more information please go to http://www.kidney.org/. It's time to improve our kidney IQ and get up to speed on risk factors, early detention and the role of the kidneys in maintaining overall health.

What good information.  When I first saw the title I was thinking "How Silly".  Then I read on and realized it is pretty important information that could be live saving.

Lanre, didn't know they had an official kidney day, interesting. They say you learn some thing new every day, I'm set for the day now thanks to you.

Just as long as Hallmark doesn't try to capitalize on Kidney Day, grin.

Have a great day, Duane

I am all for learning more about the kidney.  I just went through a bout of kidney stones.  Let me tell you that is one thing you never want to get.

Thanks for the head's up about this, Lanre.  I agree with Duane, though - Hallmark should leave this one alone (unless they make it a fundraiser for Kidney Disease Research).  Fat chance!

Thanks,  I didn't know about world kidney day and my Dad is a kidney cancer survivor.

Thanks for the heads up!  I also suffer from kidney stones.  I'm an official "stoner", requiring surgery at least once a year.  I worry about damage to my kidneys from all the stones.

Thanks for the informative post. I had surgery on my kidney when I was 6 months old, so stuff like this really affects me.  I am glad that they have a day dedicated to it.

Gary - I didn't know either Gary. But I am glad that I did. I learned some great stuff. Thanks for your comments.

Duane-You're silly. But I wouldn't surprise if Hallmark did. Thanks for your comments.

Russ-I am very sorry to hear that. But you are going to be just fine sir. Thank you for your comments.

Margaret -Hi Margaret. I agree with you Hallmark should leave this alone unless it is for a fundraiser for Kidney Disease Research. You're very welcome. Thanks for your comments.

Noama-I missed the Today Show. I hope I can see the clip when I go on their website. You are very welcome. Thanks for your comments.

Debbie-I am very happy to hear that your Dad survived. That is something good to hear today in world full of negativity and not so much good news. Thanks for your comments.

Laurie-Just keep what your doing. I know it's tough but you are going to get through this and be just fine. You are in my prayers. Thanks for your comments.

Matthew- Wow! E months old. Thank God you are still here. If you can survive that, you can survive anything. This issue is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. Thanks for your comments.

Interesting info; thanks for posting this.  Ironically, the brother in law of our REALTOR in NC recently became quite ill, seemingly overnight, and it turned out to be Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, which is an incurable kidney disease.  You just never know when it is going to hit.

Susan - Hey Susan. Like you said you never know. Life is funny isn't it? Wow! I have never heard of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. I need to look into that. Thanks for your comments.
