Things to do in Washington DC: Who is Ann Nixon Cooper?

Who is Ann Nixon Cooper?

Yesterday when President elect Barack Obama was delivering his victory speech,he mentioned a women by the name of Ann Nixon Cooper. I wanted to know who is Ann Nixon Cooper? So this is what I found out about Ann Nixon Cooper.

Ann Nixon Cooper was born on January 9,1902 in Shelbyville,Tennessee one of six siblings. When her mother died, her brothers and sisters were split up and her aunt took care of her. At the age of 20,she married Albert Berry Cooper a dentist from Tennessee.

The young couple moved to the city of Atlanta,Georgia where for a few months she worked as a policy writer for the Atlanta Life Insurance Company before starting a family. She gained the right to vote about 43 years ago at the age of 63.

In the 1970's,she was active in the community teaching residents to read as part of a tutoring programme at Ebenezer Baptist Church in the 1970's. She earned an award in 1980 by Atlanta's WXIA-TV for her contribution to welfare and civil rights.

In 2002,she was awarded the Annie L.McPheeters Medallion for community service by the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History.

And this is Barack Obama leaving a message on Mrs.Ann Nixon Cooper voicemail.
